NJM Integrates High-Speed, Serialized Bottling Line for Apace Packaging
Serialization! It’s on the mind of every pharmaceutical contract packager right now – Apace Packaging is no exception. To meet the fast approaching deadlines and increase production volume, Apace turned to NJM and installed a new high-speed bottling line with track-and-trace capabilities last year.
“The NJM line achieves almost three times the throughput [as our other bottling lines] with far fewer workers,” said Wendell Bell, Director of Operations at Apace. “This level of automation protects our product quality and keeps costs down.”
Apace’s new line packages a wide range of solid-dose products in round, square or rectangular bottles in sizes from 40 to 1500 cc. Bottles can be outfitted with different types of desiccants, fillers, caps and labels. Serialization data is added to the bottle labels with either a thermal transfer printer or laser obliteration printer, and bottles can either be bundled or packed directly into cases.
“Our goal was to think of virtually any bottling scenario that a customer might bring to us, so we could always respond ‘yes’ to their request,” said Patrick Ferguson, General Manager at Apace.
The integrated line starts with a CFI-622*8 Tablet Counter to achieve high speeds with extreme servo-driven accuracy. Bottles are capped and retorqued with two beltorques, which quickly yet gently rotate and tighten caps using two pairs of belts each. Next, an AUTOCOLT IV pressure sensitive labeler with nearly every available option maximizes versatility. A track-and-trace solution from Optel improves compliance and productivity while facilitating 4 levels of serialization and 3 levels of aggregation.
“Our equipment from NJM always does exactly what they promise it will do,” said Bell. “At the end of the day, we value the quality of their solutions and the impeccable customer service they provide.”

New GSMS High Speed Pharmaceutical Packaging Line Powered by NJM
Cremer Tablet Counter Takes Center Stage to Ensure Efficiency
For its third high-speed pharmaceutical packaging line, Golden State Medical Supply (GSMS), Inc. knew it needed to meet its company goals of maintaining high quality, high efficiency, and high output. When it came time to plan for its Camarillo, California facility, it chose the NJM Packaging Cremer CFS-622 Tablet Counter as the centerpiece.
The Cremer CFS-622 Tablet Counter has a small footprint – but packs a mighty punch. It can accommodate up to four modules, and with just a few change parts, can count almost any kind of tablet or capsule, as well as fill almost any shape of plastic or glass bottle. Because of its 100 percent counting accuracy and high speed, up to 150 bottles per minute, it’s perfect for the exacting standards that GSMS upholds.
GSMS is a company that appreciates precision. Its origins are rooted in supplying pharmaceuticals to a base near Claremont, California, where it began in 1986. Since then, GSMS has contracted with federal and state government organizations and moved into its current state-of-the-art facility in Camarillo. The veteran-owned business boasts some of the most sophisticated packaging equipment to deliver safe, quality products to its customers.
The company is so focused on quality that the new high-speed line required rigorous planning, testing, and qualification. The culmination of one year of hard work will increase the pharmaceutical packaging line capacity by 40 percent and allow for flexible line runs of 30 count to 1,000 count bottles. GSMS will be able to complete very large jobs quickly and easily while still maintaining accuracy.
GSMS has been online with its new packaging line since September, and it held a grand opening party on October 1. We’re honored to be a part of its expansion, and we appreciate the company’s trust in us. NJM was very pleased to receive the below testimonial from GSMS this week:
