At present, vaccine production has expanded and become more critical. Because of the need to make sure vaccines have been stored in the correct environment for full effectivity, vaccine manufacturers are adding one more level of quality control to the supply chain.
What is a VVM label?
A vaccine vial monitor (VVM) is a label – containing a heat-sensitive material – that is placed on a vaccine vial and gives a visual indicator of cumulative heat exposure over time. This label is applied to the top of each vial prior to final packaging.
Vaccine Vial Monitors (VVMs) are widely deployed on critical immunizations—such as polio, measles, and rotavirus vaccines—that travel through unpredictable global distribution networks. A pharmaceutical product provider requires VVMs because many biologics are highly thermosensitive; exposure to temperatures outside the strict cold chain can cause irreversible protein degradation, rendering the vaccine completely ineffective without changing its physical appearance.
What Are WHO PQS Requirements?
By utilizing a VVM, manufacturers gain a foolproof fail-safe directly on the primary packaging. This visual indicator empowers frontline healthcare workers in remote areas to verify at a glance that a vaccine is still potent before administration. Integrating high-speed VVM application directly onto specialized labeling machinery allows providers to satisfy strict World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification standards, mitigate the risk of administering compromised doses, and protect public health outcomes worldwide.
2026 Updates
WLS has integrated an additional option to their VR vial labeling machine to place a VVM label at high-speed on vial caps and can now offer a combination label machine applying the product label and VVM.
