NJM Integrates High-Speed, Serialized Bottling Line for Apace Packaging
Serialization! It’s on the mind of every pharmaceutical contract packager right now – Apace Packaging is no exception. To meet the fast approaching deadlines and increase production volume, Apace turned to NJM and installed a new high-speed bottling line with track-and-trace capabilities last year.
“The NJM line achieves almost three times the throughput [as our other bottling lines] with far fewer workers,” said Wendell Bell, Director of Operations at Apace. “This level of automation protects our product quality and keeps costs down.”
Apace’s new line packages a wide range of solid-dose products in round, square or rectangular bottles in sizes from 40 to 1500 cc. Bottles can be outfitted with different types of desiccants, fillers, caps and labels. Serialization data is added to the bottle labels with either a thermal transfer printer or laser obliteration printer, and bottles can either be bundled or packed directly into cases.
“Our goal was to think of virtually any bottling scenario that a customer might bring to us, so we could always respond ‘yes’ to their request,” said Patrick Ferguson, General Manager at Apace.
The integrated line starts with a CFI-622*8 Tablet Counter to achieve high speeds with extreme servo-driven accuracy. Bottles are capped and retorqued with two beltorques, which quickly yet gently rotate and tighten caps using two pairs of belts each. Next, an AUTOCOLT IV pressure sensitive labeler with nearly every available option maximizes versatility. A track-and-trace solution from Optel improves compliance and productivity while facilitating 4 levels of serialization and 3 levels of aggregation.
“Our equipment from NJM always does exactly what they promise it will do,” said Bell. “At the end of the day, we value the quality of their solutions and the impeccable customer service they provide.”

Apace Stays Ahead of Pharmaceutical Packaging Industry Trends With NJM
NJM Packaging Machinery Becomes Integral Part of Expanded Packaging Line
When it came time for Apace Packaging LLC to offer serialized packaging to its customers and expand its packaging capacity, they knew they needed machines that could deliver flexible, economic solutions to their customers. Apace turned to NJM Packaging for machinery to add to its new, fully automated, high-speed line because they knew our pharmaceutical packaging equipment would meet its needs.
The biggest part of the new pharmaceutical packaging line comes from NJM; we’ve partnered with Apace to provide everything from the bottle unscrambler to the 360-degree bottle inspection station. With NJM Packaging, Apace can offer a wide range of solutions to their clients. The new line can handle round, square, and oblong bottles in a variety of sizes, pouch and canister desiccants, almost any type of OSD dosage unit, and more. Basically, customers with all kinds of needs are assured that Apace can handle it – and reliably, thanks to NJM Packaging.
The bottled oral solid dose machine is the most interesting of the packaging solutions chosen by Apace. It handles bottle counts and inspections and is one of the most comprehensive machines we offer, and it feeds into another important part of Apace’s strategy: compliance.
At NJM Packaging, we’re always proud of being able to help our customers achieve their goals and expand their businesses. To learn more about Apace’s growth and plans for the future, visit Apace’s website.
Additionally, with its new integrated pharmaceutical packaging line, Apace is one step ahead of the California serialization and e-pedigree law set to take effect next year. As California often sets the stage for national legislation, Apace is already poised to comply with California law and similar state statutes that may be passed. This allows the company to fulfill orders from states that pass laws requiring e-pedigree.
NJM Assists Cal Poly Team with Line Integration for the Win in Vegas
NJM and Cal Poly Team Up for a Fully Integrated Line
Packaging solutions are a challenge and need to be learned with hands on experience for students studying to work in the packaging industry after graduation. At this year’s Pack Expo Las Vegas Show, students were able to take on a real “Pack Solution Challenge” to learn how to evaluate a project, find the right line integration solution and present the results to a panel of judges: all for a scholarship to be used for their continuing education. The students who participated are studying packaging in their respective universities and were hoping to ‘bring home a win’ at the Pack Expo Show.
Cal Poly accepted the challenge to work on this real packaging solution with the assistance of NJM Packaging, a real, total line integrator of tablet, powder and liquid packaging lines in the pharmaceutical industry. Here was the challenge:
Develop a packaging solution for a fictional company: “Innovative Pharmaceuticals Inc.” and its new fast-dissolving over-the-counter product.
Prior to the Pack Expo Show, NJM was approached by several different university teams to assist with their projects and we were excited to provide the solution for these Industrial Technology students. Cal Poly students Jeff Norton, Nick Abbatelli, Patrick Salibi and Rebecca Kisch worked with Dan Lapierre, NJM Packaging’s Vice President, to provide a packaging solution for their project. The team worked for weeks leading up to the show to find the equipment needed for the line, what the special options needed for the project were, the speeds they wanted to run, as well as all the specifications needed to develop a valid, operating line for this project. Dan Lapierre says, “… it was a pleasure working with the Cal Poly team in providing them with a real applicable solution. It was with great joy to find out at the Vegas Show that the panel judges selected Cal Poly as the Winner for 2015.”
So the newest 2016 Future Leaders in Packaging goes to: Cal Poly. Great job all!!
NJM Packaging Featured on Science Channel’s “How It’s Made”
NJM was recently featured on the Science (US) and Discovery Channel (CA)’s Television Show called “How It’s Made” in a Segment about Gelcaps.
NJM Packaging was recently featured on the Science (US) and Discovery Channel (CA)’s Television Show called “How It’s Made.” The episode originally aired in the US on May 9, 2013 and offered a segment centered on how a gelcap is actually made. Jamieson Labs was the featured company in the segment.
The first part of the video details the actual process of making a gelcap; however, around the 4th minute, the new Cremer CF-622 IMFS Tablet Counter can be seen in action counting the gelcaps and putting them in the containers.
This is a great video showing the complete manufacturing process from the creation of the actual gelcap, to its packaging. Enjoy!
